Impatience The pitfall of every ambitious person

Impatience The pitfall of every ambitious personImpatience The pitfall of every ambitious personOne of my mentors is an art dealer. He specializes in art from the middle ages. Last time we met, he showed me a part of his personal collection. Impressed by the size of the collection, I asked how long it took to accumulate everything. He said 45 years, and then he laughed when I looked surprised. He continuedThis is elend something you can buy in one go. Its not like going to the IKEA. Accumulating anything worthwhile in life takes time. First, because you dont have the money to buy everything at once. Second, not everything is always available. You must wait for the right opportunity. And waiting is one of the hardest things in life. But if you take a close look around you, you see many examples of people who waited for the right opportunity.Take all the investors who bought stocks and real estate during the financial crisis that started in 2008. That recession lasted several years. Rece ntly, I spoke to someone who invested a big chunk of his assets in the stock market between 2009 and 2011.He saved most of his money in the years that led to the crisis. Not because he predicted the global financial crisis that was sparked by subprime mortgages, but because he simply didnt know what to do. So he spent his time learning about investing. He also didnt follow the market. Instead, he saved his money - and wasnt tempted to invest it just because the economy is great. But thats not what most people do in prosperous times. When we see that the economy is growing, we think its the right time to invest and spend. We feel optimistic and we trust the market. So what do we do? We look for good investments. All of us turn into part-time investors.Whats even better, we make poor decisions without reading a single book on investing or without getting advice from knowledgeable people. Its pretty much become standard human behavior in the 21st century.Benjamin Graham, author of The In telligent Investor, and mentor to Warren Buffett, wrote this in 1949The intelligent investor is a realist who sells to optimists and buys from pessimists. In other words The long-term investor always wins because of one reason.PatienceIts not only crucial for building wealth. When you want to learn skills and do good work, impatience is one of your biggest enemies.Leonardo da Vinci, whos considered as one of the greatest artists in history, understood the danger of impatience. In Mastery by Robert Greene, I read that Leonardos motto was ostinato rigore, which translates as stubborn rigor or tenacious application.Every time he worked on a project, he reminded himself that he would approach his work with the same vigor and tenacity that he always showed. Leonardo never overlooked the details of his work. That takes patience.Find pleasure in painSo how do you apply patience to your life? One thing Ive found useful is to adopt the same mindset as Leonardo. If your work is not hard, youre n ot doing great work.Thats a perfect way to measure your own work on a daily basis. And journaling is an essential tool for that. Theres nothing else I can think of that is so effective in providing you with daily feedback.Having a mentor comes very close. However, the problem is that you often cant speak to your mentor every day. But your journal is always there. When youre trying to achieve your goals, improve yourself, and live a better life, there are moments you want to speed things up.The book youre writing, the presentation youre making, the business youre building, things cant happen fast enough. Theres nothing wrong with wanting things to happen fast. In fact, thats one of the main reasons people and companies innovate. But we have to realize theres a difference between a desire to achieve things and impatience. The former helps you, the latter harms you, especially your creativity.Like Robert Greene writes in MasteryThe greatest impediment to creativity is your impatience, th e almost inevitable desire to hurry up the process, express something, and make a splash.Big splashes dont happen. Overnight success doesnt exist. We have to remind ourselves of that whenever were impatient. It happens to every ambitious person.People who never do anything with their lives dont suffer from this. Only the people who work hard and try to make an impact do.Look at it this way. Youve spent enough time getting where you are - dont screw it up by wanting to go too fast. Spend mora time on your work. Take pride in it. Thats the only way we can do truly great work.Thiscolumnfirst appeared onDariusforoux.com.

Eight great tricks for reading peoples body language

Eight great tricks for reading peoples body languageEight great tricks for reading peoples body languageBody language provides an amazing amount of information on what other people are thinkingifyou know what to look for. And who hasnt wanted to read peoples minds at some point? You already pick up on more body language cues than youre consciously aware of. UCLA research has shown that only 7% of communication is based on the actual words we say. As for the rest, 38% comes from tone of voice and the remaining 55% comes from body language. Learning how to become aware of and to interpret that 55% can give you a leg up with other people. When youre working hard and doing all you can to achieve your goals, anything that can give you an edge is powerful and will streamline your path to success.TalentSmarthas tested more than a million people and found that the upper echelons of top performance are filled with people who are high in emotional intelligence (90% of top performers, to be exact ). behauptung people know the power that unspoken signals have in communication, and they monitor body language accordingly.Next time youre in a meeting (or even on a date or playing with your kids), watch for these cuesCrossed arms and legs signal resistance to your ideas. Crossed arms and legs are physical barriers that suggest the other person is not open to what youre saying. Even if theyre smiling and engaged in a pleasant conversation, their body language tells the story. Gerard I. Nierenberg and Henry H. Calero videotaped more than 2,000 negotiations for a book they wrote on reading body language, and not a single one ended in an agreement when one of the parties had their legs crossed while negotiating. Psychologically, crossed legs or arms signal that a person is mentally, emotionally, and physically blocked off from whats in front of them. Its not intentional, which is why its so revealing.Real smiles crinkle the eyes. When it comes to smiling, the mouth can lie but the eye s cant. Genuine smiles reach the eyes, crinkling the skin to create crows feet around them. People often smile to hide what theyre really thinking and feeling, so the next time you want to know if someones smile is genuine, look for crinkles at the corners of their eyes. If they arent there, that smile is hiding something.Copying your body language is a good thing.Have you ever been in a meeting with someone and noticed that every time you cross or uncross your legs, they do the same? Or perhaps they lean their head the same way as yours when youre talking? Thats actually a good sign. Mirroring body language is something we do unconsciously when we feel a bond with the other person. Its a sign that the conversation is going well and that the other party is receptive to your message. This knowledge can be especially useful when youre negotiating, because it shows you what the other person is really thinking about the deal.Posture tells the story.Have you ever seen a person walk into a room, and immediately, you have known that they were the one in charge? That effect is largely about body language, and often includes an erect posture, gestures made with the palms facing down, and open and expansive gestures in general. The brain is hardwired to equate power with the amount of space people take up. Standing up straight with your shoulders back is a power position it appears to maximize the amount of space you fill. Slouching, on the other hand, is the result of collapsing your form it appears to take up less space and projects less power. Maintaining good posture commands respect and promotes engagement, whether youre a leader or not.Eyes that lie. Most of us probably grew up hearing, Look me in the eye when you talk to me Our parents were operating under the assumption that its tough to hold someones gaze when youre lying to them, and they were right to an extent. But thats such common knowledge that people will often deliberately hold eye contact in an attempt to cover up the fact that theyre lying. The problem is that most of them overcompensate and hold eye contact to the point that it feels uncomfortable. On average, Americans hold eye contact for seven to ten seconds, longer when were listening than when were talking. If youre talking with someone whose stare is making you squirm- especially if theyre very leise and unblinking- something is up and they might be lying you.Raised eyebrows signal discomfort. There are three main emotions that make your eyebrows go up surprise, worry, and fear. Try raising your eyebrows when youre having a relaxed casual conversation with a friend. Its hard to do, isnt it? If somebody who is talking to you raises their eyebrows and the topic isnt one that would logically cause surprise, worry, or fear, there is something else going on.Exaggerated noddingsignals anxiety about approval. When youre telling someone something and they nod excessively, this means that they are worried about what you think of them or that you doubt their ability to follow your instructions.A clenched jaw signals stress.A clenched jaw, a tightened neck, or a furrowed brow are all signs of stress. Regardless of what the person is saying, these are signs of considerable discomfort. The conversation might be delving into something theyre anxious about, or their mind might be elsewhere and theyre focusing on the thing thats stressing them out. The key is to watch for that mismatch between what the person says and what their tense body language is telling you.Bringing It All TogetherThe bottom line is that even if you cant read a persons exact thoughts, you can learn a lot from their body language, and thats especially true when words and body language dont match.Travis Bradberry is the coauthor ofEmotional Intelligence 2.0and the cofounder ofTalentSmart. This article originally appeared onLinkedIn.

Theres more than enough time, when you use the time you have

Theres mora than enough time, when you use the time you haveTheres more than enough time, when you use the time you haveHave you ever been so busy that you struggled to bedrngnisice the needs of those around you? Even those fruchtwein dear to you?Even worse than being over-busy is being distracted by things with little or no value like mindlessly surfing the web when your child wants to play.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWithout question, there are countless things we could do at any moment of our lives. What do we choose to do with our moments? What does that say about us?How can you learn totrulyuse the time you have, so that looking back each day you will be proud of who you were and how you lived? The following is a short list of principles, that if applied, will empower you to make the most of every moment of your life. To be koranvers, developing these habits is not easy in our heavily distracted and externally-driven world. But the cost of not getting control over your time and life is astronomical. Its everything. For, how we use our time determines everything aboutWho we areWho we will becomeWhat we will accomplish in our days, and in our livesHow deep our relationships areAnd ultimately what we value mostLets begin in humility, for this is too important to ignoreBe Where You Are In Mind AndBodyWherever you are, make sure youre there. Dan SullivanAwareness is the first step. What are you doing right now? Be there, not somewhere else.If youre with your friends, be with your friends. If youre doing the dishes, do the dishes. Its amazing how bad weve all gotten at beingpresent. At actually living in the world and connecting deeply with the experiences were having with the people we love. However, awareness is far from sufficient. Indeed, full-engagement in the wrong things is no better than being distracted by something else.Good Things Are A Dime-A-Doz enWe should be careful not to exhaust our available time on things that are merely good and leave little time for that which is better or best. Dallin OaksIn every situation, you must ask yourself, Is this thebestpossible use of my time? Is this thebestapproach? Or am I settling for less? Derek Sivers has created a great benchmark for activity If something is not aHELL YES, its a no. End of story. If you are not 100% behind what youre currently doing, stop doing it. There are certainly better things you could be doing. For me, passively watching a movie with my kids is good. However, actively engaging with them whether playing games, laughing, playing out in the yard is better.Listening to or reading uplifting content is good. However, there are also better things you could be doing, like helping someone. The problem with doing good things is that they are easy to justify because they are inherently good. But, as Jim Collins, author ofGood To Great, has said,Good is the enemy of great. Few people attain great lives, in large parte because it is just so easy to settle for a good life. There are a million good things you could do this very moment. You could go to the gym. You could read a book. You could hangout with a friend. You could spend the evening with your family. You could watch a movie. But what is the best thing you could be doing right now? Context determines what is good, better, or best. Every situation is different. In some situations, its best to stop on the side of the road to help the person with a flat tire. In other situations, its best to pass them by. In some situations, its best to go to class. In other situations, its best to skip class. In some situations, the absolute best thing you could do is relax and chill-out. Or go crazy with excitement.Meaning is shaped within contexts. And every context is unique. Which is why you must bepresentto your circumstances. If you are not mindful but instead disconnected and distracted you wont be able to de termine what is good, better, or best.Always Take The HigherRoadMay we ever choose the harder right, instead of the easier wrong. Thomas MonsonI once asked an older couple whom I deeply respect how theyve lived such a beautiful life. The wife responded,In every situation, we determined to always walk the higher road.In every situation, there are always at least two options. Which one is your natural default? When the alarm clock goes off, do you push snooze or get up? When youre with your spouse, do you compliment or criticize? Do you listen, or must you always speak?Doing what is best is not always convenient. Actually, the lower road is almost always easier. As Robert Frost famously penned,Two roads diverged in a wood, and I I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.Literally every situation youre in is a fork in the road. You can become consistent even automatic at choosing the harder, better road. And you can find joy in being and becoming the person y ou desire to be. You can develop confidence using your time in meaningful ways, and positively impacting those around you.You can find satisfaction looking back on a day you invested in yourself and others which is sure to yield enormous dividends, rather than a day you merely consumed.Be Who You Ideally Want To Become,TodayHow would your life change if you made decisions TODAY as if you were already the person you want to become TOMORROW? Richie NortonWho do you want to be tomorrow? How about in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? On your80th birthday?Stephen Covey has taught that highly effective peopleBegin with the end clearly in mind.Your current behaviors are a reflection of the future vision you have of yourself. For most people, that vision is not much different than their present selves. However, once you determine who you want to become, you must start acting like that person now. Otherwise, you will never become that person. As Bill Walsh has said,Winners act like winners before they become winners.Thats how they become winners.InThird Circle Thoery,Pejman Ghadimi explains that most people envision their lives no more than 13 years into the future, mostly living week-to-week.Ghadimi argues about 20% of people envision their lives 510 years into the future, and thus act accordingly and become enormously more successful. Lastly, 2% of people envision their lives in whole beginning with the end in mind of who they want to be the day they die. Consider these words by Elon MuskI would like to die on Mars. Just not on impact. Its obvious how that vision determines Musks daily behavior. To be sure, not all of us can or should be Elon Musk. But the vision guiding his daily behaviors is instructive. Without question, the potency of his why is how he can work 100 hour weeks year-after-year. And his behaviors are a reflection ofhisvalues, which he is unapologetic about. His values may not beyourvalues. But are you consistently acting in accordance with your values? Is yo ur why strong enough to keep you choosing the harder right, or do you consistently default to the easy wrong?Give Everything To The Things That Truly Matter, And Forget About Everything ElseWhen you cannot do what you have always done, then you only do what matters most. Robert HalesBecoming a foster parent has been the hardest thing Ive ever done. The first 6 months were hell. I wasnt ready for it. In my heart, I didnt want it.Thankfully, overtime, I was able to have a change of heart. Now, I couldnt be happier to invest my time in these kids. Theyve become in large measure, mywhy if not exclusively, theyve radically strengthened my why.But being a foster parent has done more for me. Its given me clarity about what really mattersto me.If Im going to be a good foster parent, then I dont have time to do many of the things I used to do. And thats okay. Actually, its the best. Because for me, its almost forced me to forego the many good options I could put my time into for what I belie ve is the best use of my time.Whatever it is you truly value, devote your time to those things. The thingsyou consider best. And remove all other non-essential distractions from your life.Become The Master Of YourMindYou tell me what you think about when you do not have to think, and Ill tell you what you are. Llewelyn McKayIts impossible to use your time well when you cant even govern your own mind. Most peoples minds are like a garden that has been overgrown with weeds. They havent done the work of managing their minds or pruning it, digging it about, and preparing the soil for good fruits. However, you can master the garden of your mind. And when you do, you will be in-control of yourself. When you have clear, simple, and specific goals and values with which you resonate with and your thoughts are constantly mulling these things over your greatest desires will manifest quickly.Every thought you think plays a role in who you are, and how you are living in the world. As James Allen has said inAs a Man Thinketh,A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.Take-AwaysAll of these things take constant practice. You will never arrive at any of these things. Every day is simply practice at getting better. Here are a few actionable ways you can start improving the use of your time.Work on being more aware of what youre doing. Catch yourself disengaging. If youre with people, leave your phone in your car, or in a drawer, or somewhere it doesnt tempt you. Work on being where you are, and embracing the moments.Take time to write down your core values and goals. Consider Stephen Coveys advice and imagine your 80th birthday party. Who do you want to be at the end of your life? What will you have wanted to accomplish? This vision determines what is good, better, and best in your life. Once you know what you want, it becomes painfully obvious what you dont want. Thus, you wont be seduced by the many good things in life distracti ng you from the better and best. When given an option, choose the harder right. As we can learn from Steve Jobs, standards arent for bending.Consistently walk the higher road and you will be transformed internally and externally.Remove the things in your life that get in the way of the best things. Or, be highly thoughtful about how you keep these things in your life. You dont have much time on this planet.Become the master of your thoughts. When you catch yourself mindlessly wandering, or going places counter to your values and goals, stop yourself. Memorize a poem, quote, scripture, or song that brings clarity and light to you. Whenever you have a negative or unhelpful thought, recite or ponder your memorized friend. Then, reflect on your values and goals. Eventually, youll get better even automatic at thinking about the things you want to think about. For a senior position, li ke marketing head, write a career summary in not more than 3-4 lines. How Write the career summary in alignment with the job description of your dream job. This is because a quick snapshot will help the recruiter understand your career path without needing to scan the entire resume.Let us see some examples of job title + career summary in a sales and marketing head resume-Key Skills in a Marketing Head ResumeSkills essentially mean the ability to do something well. The definition itself is enough to explain the importance of this section in a marketing heads resume.A candidate aspiring to become marketing head must possess certain skills to accomplish the tasks in the next job.Recruiters are targeting certain skills in a marketing heads resume. If you are able to showcase these skills, you would land your dream interview.3 i mportant rules shall be kept in mind while writing your key skills sectionWhat Go easy on soft skills like communication and presentation. Soft skills are assumed to be there and the recruiter is looking for a more job-relevant skill like strategy formulation, etc. Soft skills are judged more at the time of face to face interview. But before you go there, they will judge you strictly on the job-relevant skills and technical skills. How Write small phrases like Strategic Planning Execution. This holds true because it would be easy for the recruiter to read small phrases rather than long sentences. Also, small phrases will help you clear the machine recruiter that is, ATS (More on this below).Where Keep the section just below career summary. This positioning becomes important because a recruiter barely has 5-7 seconds and the recruiter do not want to scan through an entire resume to find out your skillset. Correct positioning is as important as correct skills relevant to the marketing industry.Let us see some examples of key skills in a marketing head resumeGet ready to land some fantastic interviews using the skills mentioned above. All these skills are relevant for a Marketing Head job profile.Rest, the skills shall be modified according to the job description mentioned.Work Experience in a Marketing Head ResumeWork experience, as they say, is the strongest section in the entire resume because this is what defines you. This is what would be discussed once you reach the interview table.More importantly, this section will be scanned for important highlights to help recruiter make the decision.Work-experience section includes all the information of the tasks performed in each profile along with important accomplishments.Marketing head resume would showcase no less than 15+ years of experience.Given the fact that, it is increasingly important to keep in mind 2 pages as the length of the resume, the question is how to incorporate so much of information.Let us under stand by reviewing a resume in that case-Our aspiring marketing head George Costanza has worked in 2 companies, 1 for 3 years and 1 for 8 years still continuing.11 years of experience has to be incorporated in less than a page. Given the fact that rest 1 page shall be dedicated to other sections.Let us see how-Referring to the image above, you will notice that we have used 1 liners to describe the work experience. That is to say, that any marketing head aspiring candidate should summarize the tasks performed in not more than 1 line each.Sometimes 2 tasks shall be clubbed in 1 line to take care of the space constraint. The important thing to remember is that each line should make complete sense in itself. That is to say, that each line should bring a cause-effect relationship.Taking an example of a digital marketing manager-Referring to the image, you will see that our digital marketing manager has mentioned most of the points describing a cause-effect relationship. This helps the recr uiter in making a lot of sense as you clarity in what you did and what outcome was achieved. Then another important rule of thumb while constructing this section is that put the related points in a bucket(sub-heading).For example, in the image above, the recruiter would immediately scan the resume for say Search Engine Optimization. Because this is the skill that the recruiter necessarily wants in the candidate. If the candidate makes buckets for different points, this makes recruiters job very easy as the subheadings/buckets are nothing but key skills which recruiter is looking for.So if the recruiter has mentioned in the job description that the candidate must have the experience of SEO, Content Marketing, and Social Media Marketing then the above candidate will surely receive the interview call. While you are making bucketing and constructing 1 liners out of the tasks you are performing each day in office, it is important to keep highlighting important points.Given the fact that rec ruiter hardly has any time to read all the one-liners you have written, highlighting important words/figures will increase readability. For exampleWork- experience with no bolding-Work- experience with enough bolding-Which work-experience would you be interested in reading if you have just say 5 seconds? The answer is clear, highlighted words give more accurate information and register more in the human mind. That is why we learned in school, the value of highlighting which was done using underlines.Another valuable stuff here which will make your resume stand out of the lot would be expressing information in numbers, quantities, and figures.Numbers and numerals are registered in our memory faster and are able to make a much better impression on us.Same hold for a marketing head who is dealing with numbers all the time. The importance of numbers cannot be underestimated in case of a marketing head whose performance is often measured with numbers unlike in the field of teaching, history, etc.Let us look at the same example of a digital marketing head wherein we have tried removing all numeral information-Do you see a difference in the way it comes across? It now looks plain theory of a fiction novel without any impression to be made in terms of what real work is done by the candidate. So the game is to include as much quantifiable information as possible to make the best impression on the recruiter. Also, verbs play an extremely important role in expressing your work experience.Look at this-Handling a digital marketing team of 10 associates to create campaigns worth half a million dollar and manage SEOand look at this-Spearheading a digital marketing team of 10 associates to create campaigns worth half a million dollar and manage SEOThis is how it works.A power verb gets its name because of the power it lends to an information. It drives more value out of the facts and present the data to the recruiters in a trail of .For example,? Spearheading is definitely a power ve rb? Handling comes across as very casual vocabulary? Managed? Responsible for? Oversaw? Conducted? Bolstered? Increased? Identified? FiguredUsage of power verbs indicates how important you take your resume. It is not merely a casual document for you. Rather, it something that you value.Start each point with a power verb and make a powerful impression on the recruiter. Also, what plays a huge role in giving a lot of clarity in a work experience is the correct alignment of job profile, dates, and location to make it appear more be user-friendly and readable.ExampleWe would suggest you keep the job profile aligned to the left just under the company name and keep dates and city aligned to the right-hand side.Such a display of information will surely be impressive to the recruiter. And as mentioned in the example above, it is very important again to mention a one-liner description of the company you have worked in.This again makes it for the recruiter to make a decision which is our end go al.Now, last but not the least important point is that take care of tenses. If you are in presently working in the company, start with verbs like leading, managing, over-seeing, spearheading... and so on..Of course, if there is an accomplishment which has already happened in the current work experience, then it is always safe and better to club it in a separate heading like Key Achievements.Achievements section will also give a quick snapshot of what you achieved which is of great value from the perspective of the hiring manager. When you are describing a previous job, use past tense verbs like Led, Managed, Over-saw, Spearheaded... and so on..Snapshot on how to impress the recruiter with your marketing work-experience-Use quantifiable information(ratios, percentages, and numbers) over words which describing services delivered.Bucket similar points in a sub-headingBold the important information and numbers to make a quick impressionUse present tense to convey information in the presen t work experienceStart all the duties performed with a power verb and not a casual verbUse present tense for current work-experience and past-tense for all the previous jobsBucket the accomplishments in each job as a separate sub-heading in each section as Key AchievementsEducation in a Marketing Head ResumeMarketing Head position normally requires a candidate to have acquired a masters degree apart from other certifications. The best-observed trend which works here is that mention the education in the reverse chronological order.Put the Masters in Business Administration degree first then followed by Bachelors degree. As mentioned in the work-experience section, keep the college name and course name aligned to the left and keep the dates and location aligned to the right.Like in this example-Referring to the image above, please note that it is important to mention both the date of enrollment and graduation in MM/YY format.Again, each of the activity we do in resume making is to make it easy for the recruiter. We have compared many resumes and used different formats. However, this particular alignment of dates comes across as the most reader-friendly and comprehensible.Additionally, since your work experience is long, no recruiter is interested in looking at what subjects and projects you managed at college time. This section should not give too much information. In fact, if there are some achievements which are relevant to your current profile, you can take it up as a separate section in the resume and club it there.Let us look at the quick 3 rules for the education section-What Mention the degrees in reverse chronological order. In this section, you can just mention at max the CGPA achieved. ANy other information shall not be mentioned. How Use dates and location aligned to the right while university/college name and course name aligned to the left.Certifications Training in a Marketing Head ResumeCertifications hold a lot of value at this junction of career. As a marketing head, you are climbing the corporate ladder and taking up bigger roles and it is important for you to take an added advantage of the certifications pursued.Clubbing certifications in the education section do not make sense as we have observed in many resumes we see every day. This section holds so much of importance that it makes sense to showcase it separately. While certifications give you added skills and gained knowledge, many times you undertake training sessions as well. But not every training gives you a certificate. This does not diminish the role of training in your career but it also does not mean that you put training as a certificate.A better bet is to name the section as Training Certifications and mention all your training and certifications in this section.Again, it is of paramount importance to mention the month and year when you pursued the same.Since all the certifications are taken up in a week or say few months, it is okay to just mention the month and y ear when you received the certification. For example let us look at this image below-As seen in the image above, the certifications and training programs are listed in the reverse chronological order.A recruiter is interested in knowing your latest certification first and the previous certifications can be mentioned following that.Latest certification is more valid as technologies and theories keep changing.Specifically, the field of digital marketing is so dynamic that only the recent certifications will impress the recruiter.Highlight the important information like name of the certification.use separator for placement of date and certification name.Make sure to use caps lock in each word mentioned in the section. It is important to describe the certifying authority in this section as mentioned in the image above.By giving the name of the certifying authority, you give a lot of weight to the otherwise generic certification.Awards Achievements in a Marketing Head ResumeThis section i n a marketing head resume shall showcase the awards which are not associated with any work experience. There can be multiple ways out here.Either you can mention the achievements of a particular job in that job section.Or if you want to highlight the achievements in a separate section, this section can be constructed which would also include any awards received during college yearsThis section in a way showcases the extra-curricular achievements as well. But the nomenclature can be different as no recruiter is interested in knowing your extra-curricular after so many years of work experience.Just like the certifications section, this section shall also mention the recent awards first followed by previous awards.Year of receiving the award shall suffice in this section. If you mention the information like on what parameters the award was given and amongst how many nominees you were awarded, then it will have a better impact on the recruiter. In all the case, we are interested in making a better impact on the recruiter and give more clarity for decision making to be easy and quick.Compare these 2 examplesGeneric awards sectionAwards highlighting the nominations and parametersIf you compare the latter would give more impact on the readers mind.3 tips while writing the awards section-What Mention the parameters on the basis f which you received the awards and nominations out of which you won the award. How Mention the year of receiving the award separating it by a separator for clarity and readabilityWhere Put this section either below the Education section to make maximum impact.ATS- The Machine RecruiterATS essentially is automatic tracking system which is a machine recruiter which many companies have deployed to do the first round elemintaion of resumes. The moment you apply on job site, sometimes you get a rejection email within a few minutes.Yes, it is most of the times ATS.Now since you are at the mercy of ATS, it is important to understand the criteria on which a n ATS selects or rejects you.ATS is a proxy-variable to human recruiter which is deployed to make work easy for the human recruiter. There are 3 criteriaHiring manager of the companies stuffs the ATS algorithm with certain keywords matching with the job description. Idea is to eliminate the resumes which are not using the same words/figures/jargons as used in the job description.Example if the job description says that the candidate should be good in Search Engine Optimization then your key skills section shall mention the proper full form of the skill and not just SEO.On the safer side, it is good to mention both. that is put SEO in the bracket after mentioning the completeResearch as much as possible for the current marketing team in the current organization. Probably researching them on linked in or other social media sites make sense. The whole idea is to understand what kind of tasks are being performed by the team, what have they mentioned in their profiles. You can take a hint o f keywords from their profiles and put it on your resume. This would surely do a lot more than just matching the key skills with the job description. You might be great at giving presentations and have excellent interpersonal skills. But the ATS is designed to look at those skills which are very relevant to the job profile. ATS is not stuffed with soft skills like a team player.Rather it would search skills like Brand Management, Digital Marketing, Social media Marketing, etc.Look for tools which actually calculates an ATS score by comparing your resume and the corresponding job description. These tools help you understand the keywords which shall be put in to improve the resumes chances of clearing the ATS test. One of such tools which we often use in calculating ATS score for our clients is JOBSCAN.Key TakeawaysUse reverse chronological order to construct the marketing head resumeThe extra-curricular section is redundant in the marketing head resume. Rather use any such achievements i n the section named Awards Achievements.Career Summary section should be made in place of career objective and it should be aligned with your work history and job description.Use bulleting, bolding, bucketing, power verbs and correct alignment in the professional experience section.Key skills are important for the quick run through of your abilities and to clear the ATS test.Do your research for ATS clearance.Certifications Training section should be made separately. It should mention the certifying authority and date of certification in MM/YY format. For any queries, please comment below. We will be more than happy to help.

Divorce is contagious, and that might be a good thing

Divorce is contagious, and that might be a good thing Divorce is contagious, and that might be a good thing Divorce  is contagious, studies suggest, and having a close friend who is divorced increases your risk of ending your marriage. But that doesn’t mean that  happily married  people are vulnerable to some sort of airborne irreconcilable differences. It means that, for people are already struggling in their marriages, a  happy, divorced friend  could be all it takes to send them over the edge.“If divorce has had the effect of moving friends forward in their lives, then they are particularly likely to view divorce not as an unfortunate end but as a solution,” Craig S. Pedersen, an attorney and partner at the Meyer, Olson, Lowy and Meyers law firm, told  Fatherly. It is not that misery loves company, but a successful, particularly amicable divorce can look appealing to an outsider.Having a divorced, close friend raises a person’s divorce risk by 75 percent, according to  one  study  of 5,209 men and women.  Results also revealed that people are 147 percent more likely to divorce i f they have multiple divorced friends in their social network, compared to married people with mostly married friends. Divorced siblings render people 22 percent more prone to split. Even having divorced coworkers comes with a 50 percent increase in divorce risk. The study makes a compelling case for divorce contagion, but one of the main limitations is that  every  stage of marriage is heavily influenced by peer pressure. There’s  evidence  that people are significantly more likely to have babies within two years of their  friends  starting families, and that we tend to marry when we sense that  our peer groups are getting hitched.  Divorce may be contagious, but it may well be the result of a lot of people getting married or having kids for the wrong reasons,  Jessica Markham, a divorce attorney, says.    â€œA lot of people get married and have kids that shouldn’t marry anyone and probably shouldn’t have kids,” Markham told  Fatherly. For couples already experiencing problem s and considering divorce, a close friend’s choice to end their relationship is often the final straw.  Having a divorced friend “can provide the shot of courage that one has been looking for in advance of taking that daunting first step toward ending a bad marriage,” Pedersen says. But it does not have to be. The key to ensuring that your friend’s problems don’t bleed into your own marriage is understanding that friends are good at listening, but they’re generally terrible at giving neutral advice. And the closer friends are, the more influence and less perspective they tend to have, psychotherapist Brooke Sprowl warns.“They often project their own experiences and preferences onto one another when giving advice,” Sprowl told  Fatherly.  â€œIf a friend sees divorce as the only way to work through relationship problems, they are likely to advise you to to take that route.”This article was originally posted on Fatherly.

Important Behavioral Skills That Employers Value

Important Behavioral Skills That Employers Value Important Behavioral Skills That Employers Value With any and all jobs, there are certain specific skills required to perform the work well. Required skills will vary from position to position, and you can learn what they are by reading job descriptions. But there are other skills that almost all jobs require, and hiring supervisors may not think to mention them. What Are Behavioral Skills? Behavioral skills often fall under the general heading of good character, friendliness, maturity, or common sense, and many people assume they come naturally as part of being good or smart- they don’t. These are skills that must be learned and practiced. The good news, its entirely possible to develop these behavioral skills at any time. Many of these behavioral skills are social in nature. They concern how well you can get along with other people, including your supervisor, your colleagues, customers, and clients. The Top 4 CommunicationGood communication actually consists of many different sub-skills, from appropriate patterns of body language and eye contact to the ability to write clear and accurate reports. Accurate listening and the ability to follow instructions are especially important but are often ignored or taken for granted. Many people simply do not pay close attention to what others say or write and do not ask follow-up questions to check their understanding. As a result, individuals act on their own inaccurate assumptions and create inefficiencies and frustrations at work. If you can really listen, your work will be a cut above many of your competitors. Goal-Setting and PlanningAnybody can wish for something to happen, but to accomplish anything (except by accident), you have to make a plan- which surprisingly few people know how to do. Planning requires setting concrete goals, identifying workable action steps, and making a commitment to see the plan through. Even setting the initial goal can be difficult when multiple issues are competing for attention. Effective planning requires arranging problems by importance and, often, delegation. It is impossible to do everything at once, but if you focus on the most important tasks and ask for help, you can accomplish a lot. NumeracyNumeracy is to math what literacy is to written language. Surprisingly, many adults are functionally innumerate, despite knowing how to solve complex math problems. Numeracy means being able to think clearly and intelligently about numbers in real life, not just on a test. A classic example of innumeracy is reacting differently to news stories or advertising depending on whether the same quantity is expressed as a percent, a decimal, or a fraction- and most people do just that, which is why sale signs always use percent. Becoming numerate is an important part of critical thinking. EmpathyBeing an empathetic individual comes naturally to some, but is less natural to others. Behaving with empathy means more than feeling bad for someone whos sad, or sharing in someone elses joy. It means being able to step into someone elses world to understand not just what their point of view is, but also  why  they have that point of view. The boss might be angry because shes feeling undue pressure youre not aware of. A colleague might have a large ego about a project because theyre afraid of losing their job. You never know what other people have going on. Empathy is a behavioral skill that can help you to not only keep your own peace of mind but can also help you to grow in your career because empathetic people tend to put others at ease. Skills List Here is a list of behavioral skills. Required skills will vary based on the job for which youre applying, so also review our list of  skills listed by job  and type of skill. Identify the skills you have that your prospective employer wants, and remember to highlight these in your resume, cover letter, and job interview. Be prepared with examples that demonstrate your use of each sought-after skill. Some required behavioral skills, such as taking the initiative, will likely be listed in the job description. Others, such as controlling your own emotions, may not be listed because the hiring supervisor may simply assume applicants will have the skill. In those cases, it could actually be counterproductive to highlight the skill when you apply; doing so is the equivalent of boasting that you can dress yourself. It could make you look bad to overstate the basics.   Some hiring supervisors may ask about skills that others just take for granted. Be prepared to give examples of all the relevant skills that you have, even if you doubt the interviewer will ask.   You can use the following list not just to get an idea of what employers may be looking for, but also to identify areas where you need to study up. Origins and Use of the U.S. Military Salute

Origins and Use of the U.S. Military Salute Origins and Use of the U.S. Military Salute The origin of the Hand Salute is uncertain. Some historians believe it began in late Roman times when assassinations were common. A citizen who wanted to see a public official had to approach with his right hand raised to show that he did not hold a weapon. Knights in armor raised visors with the right hand when meeting a comrade. This practice gradually became a way of showing respect and, in early American history, sometimes involved removing the hat. By 1820, the motion was modified to touching the hat, and since then it has become the Hand Salute used today. In British history, in the early 1800s, the Coldstream Guards amended the British military salute custom of tipping the hat. They were instructed to clap their hands to their hats and bow as they pass by. This was quickly adopted by other Regiments as wear and tear on the hats by constant removal and replacing was a matter of great concern. By the mid 19th Century, the salute had evolved further with the open hand, palm to the front, and this has remained the case since then. Most historians believe, however, that the U.S. Military salute was influenced more by the British Navy. The Naval salute differs from the Open Hand British Army Salute in that the palm of the hand faces down towards the shoulder. This dates back to the days of sailing ships when tar and pitch were used to seal the timber from seawater. To protect their hands, officers wore white gloves, and it was considered most undignified to present a dirty palm in the salute, so the hand was turned through 90 degrees. When to Salute The salute is a courteous exchange of greetings, with the junior member always saluting first. When returning or rendering an individual salute, the head and eyes are turned toward the Colors or person saluted. When in ranks, the position of attention is maintained unless otherwise directed. Military personnel in uniform are required to salute when they meet and recognize persons entitled (by grade) to a salute except when it is inappropriate or impractical (in public conveyances such as planes and buses, in public places such as inside theaters, or when driving a vehicle). Persons Entitled to a Salute The President of the United States (Commander-in-Chief)Commissioned Officers and Warrant OfficersAny Medal of Honor RecipientOfficers of Friendly Foreign Countries A salute is also rendered When the United States National Anthem, To the Color, Hail to the Chief, or foreign national anthems are played. To uncased National Color outdoors. On ceremonial occasions (such as Change of Command, and Military Parades). At reveille and retreat ceremonies, during the raising or lowering of the flag.During the sounding of honors. When the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag is being recited outdoors. When turning over control of formations. When rendering reports. Salutes are not required when Indoors, except when reporting to an officer or when on duty as a guard.Addressing a prisoner.Saluting is obviously inappropriate. In these cases, only greetings are exchanged. (Example: A person carrying articles with both hands, or being otherwise so occupied as to make saluting impracticable, is not required to salute a senior person or return the salute to a subordinate.)Either the senior or the subordinate is wearing civilian clothes (a salute, in this case, is not inappropriate, but is not required.) Officers of equal rank pass each other (a salute, in this case, is not inappropriate, but it is not required.) Prisoners whose sentences include punitive discharges have lost the right to salute. All other prisoners, regardless of custody or grade, render the prescribed salute except when under armed guard. Any military person recognizing a need to salute or a need to return one may do so anywhere at any time. Reporting Indoors When reporting to an officer in his office, the military member removes his headgear, knocks, and enters when told to do so. He approaches within two steps of the officer’s desk, halts, salutes, and reports,  Sir (Ma’am), Private Jones reports.  The salute is held until the report is completed and the salute has been returned by the officer. When the business is completed, the member salutes, holds the salute until it has been returned, executes the appropriate facing movement, and departs. When reporting indoors under arms, the procedure is the same except that the headgear is not removed and the member renders the salute prescribed for the weapon with which he is armed. The expression under arms means carrying a weapon in your hands, by a sling, or a holster. When reporting to a noncommissioned officer, the procedures are the same, except no salutes are exchanged. Reporting Outdoors When reporting outdoors, the military member moves rapidly toward the officer, halts approximately three steps from the officer, salutes, and reports (as when indoors). When the member is dismissed by the officer, salutes are again exchanged. If under arms, the member carries the weapon in the manner prescribed for saluting. Saluting Persons in Vehicles The practice of saluting officers in official vehicles (recognized individually by grade or identifying vehicle plates and or flags) is considered an appropriate courtesy. Salutes are not required to be rendered by or to personnel who are driving or riding in privately owned vehicles except by gate guards, who render salutes to recognized officers in all vehicles unless their duties make the salute impractical. When military personnel are drivers of a moving vehicle, they do not initiate a salute. Other Salutes In Formation.  Individuals in formation do not salute or return salutes except at the command Present, ARMS. The individual in charge salutes and acknowledges salutes for the entire formation. Commanders of organizations or detachments that are not a part of a larger formation salute officers of higher grade by bringing the organization or detachment to attention before saluting. When in the field under battle or simulated battle conditions, the organization or detachment is not brought to attention. An individual in formation, at ease or at rest, comes to attention when addressed by an officer. Not in Formation.  On the approach of an officer, a group of individuals not in formation is called to Attention by the first person noticing the officer, and all come sharply to Attention and salute. This action is to be taken at approximately 6 paces away from the officer, or the closest point of approach. Individuals participating in games, and members of work details, do not salute. The individual in charge of a work detail, if not actively engaged, salutes and acknowledges Salutes for the entire detail. A unit resting alongside a road does not come to Attention upon the approach of an officer; however, if the officer addresses an individual (or group), the individual (or group) comes to Attention and remains at Attention (unless otherwise ordered) until the termination of the conversation, at which time the individual (or group) salutes the officer. Outdoors.  Whenever and wherever the United States National Anthem, To the Color, Reveille, or Hail to the Chief’ is played, at the first note, all dismounted personnel in uniform and not  in formation  face the flag (or the music, if the flag is not in view), stand at Attention, and render the prescribed Salute. The position of Salute is held until the last note of the music is sounded. Military personnel not in uniform will stand at Attention (remove headdress, if any, with the right hand), and place the right hand over the heart. Vehicles in motion are brought to a Halt. Persons riding in a passenger car or on a motorcycle dismount and salute. Occupants of other types of military vehicles and buses remain in the vehicle and sit at attention; the individual in charge of each vehicle dismounts and renders the Hand Salute. Tank and armored car commanders salute from the vehicle. Indoors.  When the National Anthem is played indoors, officers and enlisted personnel stand at Attention and face the music, or the  flag  if one is present. Saluting Colors National and organizational flags, which are mounted on flagstaffs equipped with finials, are called Colors. Military personnel passing a military formation in which an uncased National Color is being carried, salute at six steps distance and hold the Salute until they have passed six steps beyond it. Similarly, when the uncased Color passes by, they salute when it is six steps away and hold the Salute until it has passed six steps beyond them. NOTE: Small flags carried by individuals, such as those carried by civilian spectators at a parade, are not saluted. It is improper to salute with any object in the right hand or with a cigarette, cigar, or pipe in the mouth. Uncovering Officers and enlisted men under arms uncover only when Seated as a member of (or in attendance on) a court or board.Entering places of divine worship. In attendance at an official reception. Personnel  remove  their headdress indoors. When outdoors,  military  headdress is never removed, or raised as a form of salutation. When appropriate, civilians may be saluted in lieu of removing the headdress. Saluting Upon Boarding Naval Ships When military personnel (of any service) board U.S. Navy ships, either as an individual or as a unit leader, they salute according to naval procedures. When boarding a  naval ship, upon reaching the top of the gangway, face and salute the national ensign. After completing this salute, salute the officer of the deck who will be standing on the  quarter deck  at the head of the gangway. The officer of the deck may be a commissioned officer,  warrant officer, or  petty officer  (enlisted). When saluting the officer of the deck, request permission to board,  Sir (or Maam), Request permission to come aboard.  The officer of the deck will return the salute. When leaving the ship, render the same salutes in reverse order, and request permission to leave,  Sir (or Maam), Request permission to go ashore.

Graduating from College with the End Goal in Mind A Career

Graduating from College with the End Goal in Mind â€" A Career Graduating from College with the End Goal in Mind â€" A Career Americas unemployment rate recently hit its lowest level in seven years. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, thats just in time for 2.8 million graduates with bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees to enter the workforce. However, a college degree does not always lead to gainful employment. Millennials make up 40 percent of the unemployed in the United States, according to Anthony Carnavale, a director and research professor at Georgetown Universitys Center on Education and Workforce. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that students select a college or university with the resources to land them a job. While it is important to consider proximity, cost, accreditation and atmosphere, you also want to keep the end goal in mind a career. So what else should you look at when researching a school? Make meaningful industry connections. Its all about connections in todays job hunts, and its likely the same will be true for the class of 2020 and beyond. In fact, 80 percent of jobs arent advertised according to Steven Rothberg, founder of CollegeRecruiter.com. A search on a universitys LinkedIn page will reveal the cities, companies and industries in which alumni work. Access to a strong alumni network will help prepare students for a career by opening doors to internships and jobs. A network of trusted and connected professors is equally as important as a network of successful alumni. During the campus visit, students should ask about the facultys experience and reputation and make introductions early. Gain real world experience. Todays employers are on the lookout for students who have found their niche and demonstrated leadership skills in real-world scenarios. For example, students thinking about a career in engineering should look for schools with programs like  EcoCAR 3, a premier collegiate competition grooming the next generation of advanced engineers trained across disciplines from engineering to marketing. Public relations majors can participate in the  Bateman Case Study Competition, where college teams create and implement a full public relations campaign to raise awareness on a selected topic. The  National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition  offers students interested in information assurance or computer security the opportunity to defend a commercial network against common outside threats. More and more were seeing todays top companies request students from our program because theyve gained the hands-on experience that the classroom doesnt offer, says Kristen De La Rosa, EcoCAR 3 program director at the U.S. Department of Energys Argonne National Laboratory. We give students the opportunity gain access to millions of dollars of cutting-edge technology and top industry experts to solve complex engineering and marketing challenges. For this reason, almost 100 percent of our participants land a job immediately after graduation. Position yourself close to the action. While a beautiful campus is nice to look at, that alone isnt enough to justify years of time and money. It helps to be close to an industry hot-spot where internship and volunteer opportunities are plentiful and easy to access. Studying near industry hubs will help students gain access to mentors, networking events and international conferences, furthering their competitive advantage and adding value to their degree. Tech-savvy students who dream of launching the next big start-up should position themselves near the action in Silicon Valley, Boston or Austin. For those looking to create the next head-turning design it is best to study fashion and design in New York City or Los Angeles. Physical proximity to an industry, participation in extracurricular activities and third-party recommendations can help make a students dream career a reality. Parents and high schoolers should keep these tips in mind throughout the college application process to make the most of college and hopefully land that first job.

Why Are Extroverts Linked to Career Success Because They Have Mentors

Why Are Extroverts Linked to Career Success Because They Have Mentors Why Are Extroverts Linked to Career Success Because They Have Mentors A recent study from the University of Missouri found, perhaps unsurprisingly, that extroverts and people who exhibit proactive behavior are more likely to find career success. But dont take this as condemnation to a life of low success, introverts. See, extroverts arent inherently successful in ant mysterious, ineffable way. Rather, they simply tend to engage in certain behaviors that lead to career success, a big one being that they  pursue developmental relationships. Those who are extroverted and have a proactive personality are naturally more likely to develop mentor relationships, explains MU Trulaske College of Business Professor Daniel Turban in a press release. It makes sense: Extroverts tend to be more outgoing; therefore, theyre more likely to meet and forge connections with people who can become their mentors. Turban, the researcher behind these findings, says that the study doesnt so much prove extroverts are more successful as it does identify the mechanisms through which proactive behavior lead to career success. We  know personality has an effect on outcomes of value â€" in this case, career success, Turban says.  What we wanted to do is understand the mechanisms through which that occurs, and we want to understand the mechanisms because, for people who maybe dont have the personality dispositions to naturally or intuitively tend toward these behaviors, they can still engage in those behaviors. For example, the research found that proactive people receive more mentoring because they tend to be more naturally outgoing. Introverts can  achieve more mentoring, too. They just have to be more conscious about seeking out mentors and building other crucial developmental relationships. People that are extroverted tend to have more energy and seek out social relations, and people who are introverted may not be as natural in that, Turban says. But if you know that establishing social relations is  important, you can then engage in behaviors to  do that. Proactive People Have More Knowledge â€" But Not Because Theyre Smarter The study also found that people with proactive personalities tended to have more knowledge than their less proactive counterparts, which in turn leads again to greater career success. Once more, this is not the result of any inherent difference in extroverts or other proactive people, but an extension of the behaviors proactive people tend to engage in. What I think happens is proactive people tend to seek out opportunities to engage in more behaviors and actions, Turban says. The more you do, the more opportunities you have to learn. If organizations want to encourage employees â€" whether introvert, extrovert, or otherwise â€" to learn, theyd do well to promote climates of psychological safety in which employees feel more comfortable taking risks. Learning involves risk. Innovation involves risk. If people are fearful â€" if there is not a climate of safety â€" they are less likely to take risks and less likely to learn, Turban says. Learning sometimes involves learning what doesnt work. If people are fearful of making mistakes, its going to be more challenging for them to learn. While employers work to institute climates of psychological safety, employees can do a little internal work of their own by trying to become a little less self-conscious. Heres how I describe it to my students: If Im totally self-conscious, its hard to learn. Im not going to put myself in the situation where Ill have the opportunity to learn, Turban says. If you can create that climate within yourself, youre going to learn more than a person who is limited either by their climate, their perception of their climate, or by being overly self-conscious.

Video Pitching Technical Ideas to Non-Technical Audiences

Video Pitching Technical Ideas to Non-Technical Audiences Video Pitching Technical Ideas to Non-Technical Audiences Video: Pitching Technical Ideas to Non-Technical Audiences Tell me about your work. This is a dreaded line for many of us in technical fields, especially when it comes from those outside the engineering discipline. Where do you start? How much detail do you give? What does your listener already know? What does your listener even want to know? How you resolve these questions will shape the way different types of people receive your message. Engaging with non-technical audiences will occur throughout your career, and the way you communicate your ideas can impact how others perceive your work. Whether you are chatting with friends and family, applying for funding, or advising decision-makers effective communication is key to success. Steven Hoffenson will draw on his experiences as an academic-turned-congressional staffer discussing how to effectively share technical ideas with non-technical audiences. Steven Hoffenson is a mechanical engineer with interdisciplinary interests in sustainable product design and policy development.
